The Alfa Romeo P2 was designed and built by a team led by Vittorio Jano, who had left Fiat in October 1923 and started working at Alfa Romeo the following month. Jano and his team designed and built the P2, with a 1,987 cc, 8-cylinder, twin o.h.c. s/c engine that produced 140 horsepower at 5,500 rpm.
The P2 would go onto dominate the 1924 GP season, with Ascari easily winning its racing debut at the Cremona. Campari followed that up with a win at the European Grand Prix at Lyon and Ascari won again later that year at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Louis Wagner was the team's third driver, Enzo Ferrari was part of the team but did not start at the European Grand Prix due to illness, and Ferdinando Minoia joined the team for the Italian Grand Prix.
