Maserati Tipo 60 Birdcage
The Tipo 60/61 began life as an evening project in October 1958 for a 34 year old engineer named Guilio Alfieri. The budget restraints forced the design brief to focus on a race car customers would buy and compete with, as opposed to the more costly option of a factory run race car for Maserati themselves. Furthermore, the limited investment and the lack of modern monocoque technology restricted Guilio to utilise the company parts bin from obsolete racers. Today they are an extremely rare sight, only twenty-two Tipo 60/61 cars were produced, six Tipo 60 and sixteen Tipo 61, with one of the Tipo 60s later converted to Tipo 61 specification. Their rarity is compounded by the owners propensity to race and, alas, crash them. Some were scrapped, others modified with V8 engines, and the lucky few were rebuilt and restored to exacting, original standards.
