The Lexus LC500 GT500 was launched at the 2016 Suzuka 1,000km. The new model had been developed in secret by TRD with news of its impending appearance only emerging part way through the 2016 season, partly because the production version of the car had yet to be revealed.
Work on the LC500 began in 2015 when the 2017 GT500 rules package was announced. The new, but at that point secret, model was selected and manipulated to fit the dimensions defined by the technical regulations. A key aim for the 2017 car was to improve the cooling package of the car, but the overall aerodynamic package also had to be entirely re-worked due to the rule changes.
Mechanically the LC500 GT500 is near identical of the RC F GT500, with the same chassis, transmission, and many other components being carried over by regulation. Indeed the only major updates are to the suspension geometry and the engine. GT500 cars share a large number of common parts with the German DTM series including the impact structures, transmission and suspension elements. The chassis itself is a common design too.
